The Last Day Of The 29 Faces Journey

When I entered in to the collective for 29 Faces in 30 Days my ambition was to make myself practice faces in the hopes that I would be more comfortable doing them when I wanted to.  What I found in the collective was many very talented women who gave me constant inspiration!  I am so grateful for that constant little nudge to try new things, and to want to learn more ways of creating a face.

I certainly haven’t learned all I want to learn by any stretch of the imagination.  That will take a lot longer than 30 days .  LOL  But I have become more comfortable with the use some of my mediums.  I have learned to create a face that I like, without it draining all the energy out of me just trying to get to that space.  I have learned to erase, and at first I thought I should just be able to draw without that.  Sometimes I can make a quick pen sketch, but often it is a pencil sketch, with much erasing.  Then out comes the acrylics. colored pencils and maybe pens.

Here are the final faces.  Since I haven’t posted face 26 through 29 here on my blog.  I would like to share them now.

Sharing my art

I haven’t been posting on here since Wednesday the 18th.  I have been trying to keep up with the 29 Faces in 30 Days, and playing catchup with my Book of Days/Mirrors.  I’m starting to get faster at the faces.  Learning what works for me and what doesn’t has helped a lot.  I think this challenge was great for me!  I stressed so much over each face I was doing.  I just didn’t have any fun.  Now I am beginning to truly enjoy the process.  Here are the faces I haven’t posted yet on my blog.

Faces 20 and of 29 003

Faces 20 and 21.  This page is Walk In The Park.  It is a mom and her daughter taking a walk with their dog.  I don’t know how to draw a dog, so I wrote dog and put it on a leash.  LOL  The background on this (which I put down first, then drew over) was made from waxed paper that had been used for drop papers behind my paintings.  It was very frail and tore if I wasn’t really careful.

Faces 20 and of 29 002 It was a cold winters day so they had coats and hats on.  I like doing this little sketchy people sometimes.  Very different from trying to draw the larger faces.

Faces 20 and of 29 001  This is my attempt at a child.  It looks more like a very tiny woman.  I will have to work on that.

Faces 22 of 29 002 Face 22.  I love textured background.  I see a lot of people just drawing the faces on a plane background.  I can’t.  I have tried.  I always start fussing with the background.  Sometimes I do the background first then the face over it.  Sometimes I do the background and do the face on a plane piece of paper and collage it on top.  I have even tried doing the face, then creating the background around it.  I find this the hardest to do.

Faces 23 of 29 002Face 23.  This is where I tried to leave the background alone.  She looked lonely so I added texture using stencils with Spackle, and then added some stencils with colored pencils.  Added a little color here and there with water color pens.

Faces 24 of 29 002Face 24.  She is one of my favorites!  I saw someone make really fluffy hair and wanted a girl with hair like that.  This was made with a stamp that I had and then I went over that to highlight certain areas in a water color pen.

Faces 25 of 29 002Face 25  I did the background first on this one.  Then did the face on parchment paper and collaged it on top.  The hair on this one was also fun.  Done with Papermate pen and water color pens.  Papermate pens are really inexpensive and will write on most anything.  They have come out with some new colored pens called Ink Joy.  They are great too.

OK this catches me up to today.  Since this blog is already longer than I expected, I will just send you hugs and smiles and go make my breakfast  🙂

Where do I fit in?

I have been trying to understand where I fit in in the art world.  What type of artist I am.   I admire greatly those of you who can paint a face so that it looks like some great master painted it.  To me, you are great masters in your own right.  But do I want to do that?  No  At least not right now.  Than what is it that I want.  Why am I trying to draw faces at all?  I realize I just want the ability to draw faces well enough to put them on my collaged backgrounds.  LOL  I want to have something to put on the backgrounds some of the time, but want it to be something I made.  Clipping faces from magazines and putting them on the background (not that there is anything wrong with that)  just doesn’t make me happy.  I am searching for what makes me happy in my art.  Otherwise, why am I doing it?  I have no intention of selling my art, so I think I am only doing it to make myself happy.  🙂

I have decided that I am a Collage Artist, a Multi Media Artist and that the faces or other sketches, animals, houses, trees, flowers, etc., are incidental to the collage and background fun.

I have found the 29 Faces to be quite a challenge keeping up with.  And I think when this challenge is complete I will step back a bit from the face making and concentrate more on the mixed media thing for a while.  Give myself a rest.  Not to say that I won’t be making faces.  We do a lot of faces in Effy Wild’s Book of Days class and I will do them in my own journals, but I won’t have to create them daily.

Before I go I would like to share my angle.  I used her as face 19/29.  But she is really just something my muse wanted to do and I let her.  She and I enjoyed this and I will be working on doing some more angles in the future.

Faces and BOD

A few of weeks ago I was playing with my homemade spray paints and some new stencils I had purchased.  Just wanted to see if the spray paint worked OK and what the little stencils looked like when I used them.  Hmmm  should have taken a photo of that so you could see.  Oh well  🙂

Then one day I decided to try out sketching faces with just an ordinary pen I had around the house (a Papermate pen).  So I grabbed the piece of paper I had experimented with my paints on, turned it over and drew a couple of faces on it.  Liked the way the pen worked and have been using it here and there ever since.  It will write on most surfaces.  I will have to get more of them before this one runs out of ink.

So today at about 4:30 am I was unable to sleep and got up.  Thought I would work on another face.  Saw the two faces I had already drawn and decided to use those.  Thus catching myself up with faces!   Yahhh!  I added a little color with paint pens, colored pencils.  Tore the picture out of the page.  Flipped the bits that were left over so the spray paints and stencils showed.  Used Gell Medium to glue both the faces and the background down, and this is what I got.

Face 17 and 18 for 29 Faces.  I had such fun doing this (even if it was 4:30 am)

Face 17.  Was trying to do a childs face.  Going to try this some more.

Face 18.  I like the way the face looks when you just put a minimal amount of color on it.  May do this more often.

Also thought I would share my Book of Days Lesson 11 with you in case you haven’t already seen it.

Image

This is the complete spread.  I used watered down acrylic paints for the background.  Then stencils and stamps for more texture.  I made a stencil out of cardboard for the feather.  Then used black acrylic paint to put down the basic feather and beige acrylic paint for the accent.  Highlighted it with black charcoal pencil.

Image

The face was sketched in colored pencil, painted with acrylics and highlighted in the colored pencils.  This was my first attempt at making a braid.  I like the way it turned out.  Will be doing it again.

OK That’s it for now.  Have to go see the doctor this morning.  I have been in pain (my hips) since Thursday and have procrastinated talking to the Dr about it long enough.  It is some better then it was at first, but I think that is just because I have been doing very little.  If I get up and stand for to long, or try to walk very far (like to the mail box) the pain comes back with a vengeance.  I haven’t got a clue why, so thought I should tell my Dr about it.  Hopefully he will look at me and it will be all better and that will be the end of that (not too likely though).   Don’t want something else wrong with me!!  So please send good thoughts.  Have a happy, smiley day!

That is enough for today.  Sending you guys hugs and smiles  🙂

Sharing my ABC Journal and the most recent 29 faces

I have started working on an ABC Journal.  It is just a small journal, 6″ x 9″.  I will work on it when I just want something to play in.  This is what I have completed so far.

Faces and Doodeling

My day has been…well not really messed up, but not going along it’s usual trail.  It is almost 11:00 am and I have been up since 6:30am.  I haven’t even had breakfast yet.  With my Diabetes and my pill taking it is important for me to eat my meals.  So I am having breakfast right now.

I have several different things to share with you today.  I haven’t posted my last couple of faces for you to critique.  Several of you have seen them posted in our group, but here they are for those of you who haven’t seen them yet.

Image

This is face 5/29.  I wanted to try doing closed eyes.  I don’t think I was very successful at making the eyes realistically closed.  That means I will just have to try again.

Image

I liked the blue hair that several people have been doing…thus I did blue hair.

Image

This is face 6/29.  I wanted to try using my Caran D’Ache Neocolors and my new Aqua-flo watercolor paint brushes.  The background is acrylic.  I first sketched her lightly in pencil and then used the Neocolors.  I really like them.  In fact I like them so much I am working on today’s face only with them.  I am not sketching the face out first.  Wish me luck with that one.  I figure, if it turns out awful, I can always paint over it.  🙂

I have a friend that wants me to go back on DeviantArt.  Spent a great deal of my morning re-activating my DeviantArt account.  I haven’t been on it since 2009 and couldn’t remember my user name or password.  Have that all fixed now and posted some of my art on it.  I used it to post my photographs before, so this will be different for me.  There are so many talented artist on their.  Don’t remember how to maneuver the site and use all the little goodies on it.  But I will pick it up again.  I bet they have a button I could put here in my blog.

Also wanted to share with you a page in my Planner that I am doodling.  I check for doodles to try on Pinterest and try them out in my planner.  It is still a work in progress, but I like the way it is going.

Image

Doodles don’t come easy for me, but I want the ability to do them to work them in to my Art Journals.

Well I need to go work on my face for today.  Hope you have a great weekend!  Sending hugs and smiles!  🙂

Aside

Reflections Of My Week

Current time:  10 40 a.m.

On the menu:  Cheerios with fresh strawberries, walnuts and slivered almonds.

Out the window:  Makaya (my cat) chasing dragonflies!  Hopefully he won’t catch any.

Read:  Moonlight & Vines a collection of short stories by Charles de Lint.  I love this

author and have a collection of his books.

Listening:  to the washing machine…doing my laundry.

Good things

  • Morning coffee.  Just switched to 1/2 decaff and 1/2 regular instead of just decaff.
  • Facebook messaging with an old friend.
  • My art makes me smile.
  • Getting some new craft supplies.
  • I just ordered the Right Brain Planner.  It will start in October.
  • Meeting my goal of working out 5 times this week.
  • Meeting my goal of 5 faces in 5 days for my 29 Faces Challenge.  Soo proud!
  • Started my ABC Journal…only finished A & B, but I did say “started”.

Icky things and their silver lining.

  • I paid all my bills for the month  🙂  Love it when I don’t have to think about it for a whole month!
  • Didn’t make a list this week of things I need to get done.  So starting a list of things to accomplish for this next week.  Seems to help if I write it down.  Not very good about making list, but they do help.

Around my life

  • Enjoying working on the 29 Faces in 30 Days challenge.  Hard to keep up, but feel it is good for me to push myself.  It is giving me the practice that I know I need and want, just usually procrastinate away.
  • Have started my ABC journal.  This is just a little, easy, fun journal.
  • Trying to decide how to bind my 3 journal that I am making with loose pages.  Never done loose pages before.  Love working on them, but can’t make up my mind on a good way to bind them.  One is my ABC journal (6′ x 9′), another is my 29 Faces Journal (9′ x 12′), and then my Mixed Media Art Journal (11 1/2′ x 12′.

I am participating with Cynthia Lee and The Scattered Life Collective.  Come play with us 🙂

Natures Goddess

This morning I was determined to finish a pencil sketch I had started a couple of days ago.  I just had the basic features on the page and was trying to get myself to complete the shading.  I started shading with my graphite pencil and hated it.  So I erased it and picked up a colored pencil in yellow okra.  I finished her in colored pencils in yellow okra, light flesh, burnt okra and dark brown.  Image

As usual I could see things wrong, but was very pleased over all.  Especially with the shading.  So I posted her on 29 Faces in 30 Days.  Then I started her background.

Image

The background turned out just as I had it in my head.  I had to clap my hands I was so excited!  I sprayed with some of my home made paint sprays, glued on some paper with leaves on it, and added more background leaves with a home made stamp and vintage photo Distress Ink.  Very pleased with myself today  🙂  Now what’s for tomorrow?

Sending hugs and smiles

Aside

Working on my faces and my Faces Journal.

So I have been trying to work on making faces that I see others make, and I love so much.  Faces with more character and personality.  Not pretty, but interesting.  But every time I try, it just turns out like all the other faces I make. I don’t think my muse wants to create those types of faces.  At least not right now.  After all I haven’t been doing faces for very long.  Here, I’ll share my first face with you.  I did this on February 19, 2013.

Image

I didn’t have very good glues to past her down in my Art Journal so she is very wavy.  And it isn’t that the picture is blurry…she really doesn’t have much of a nose.  I think I like her hair though.  LOL

This is my latest post to 29 Faces in 30 Days.  You have seen this one before in my August 27th blog post.  I made a background for her and added her to my Faces Journal.

Image

Hopefully you can see some improvement.

Image

Then I was watching a video on u tube by Pam Carriker on face making using the stencil she has made and has for sell.  She was saying that she feels you should perfect drawing a realistic face before you start drawing a cutesy face or a stylized face.  Hmmm I felt like she was talking to me. So I have decided, for now, that is what I am going to do, continue to work on learning to draw and paint a more realistic face.

My 29 Faces Journal is made with loose papers that I am going to bind into a journal.  Have any of you got any suggestions on how I can do this?  I know I can use rings to bind it, but do you know of any other way?
