Evening Faces

In the evening, while I sit and watch TV, I have started going back to sketching faces.  I miss the 29 Faces challenge.  I really enjoyed that.  So I am just sketching faces, then putting them aside and using them to add a spark on the backgrounds in my journals.

BOOK OF DAYS 2014

This is my first one.  I sketched her with pencil in a watercolor tablet I had.  Then used my Prismacolor pencils to finish her face and hair.  Then an Extra Fine Tip Sharpie for her eyes and lashes.   I fluctuated back and forth between liking her and seeing all of her flaws.  Then I decided to make a background for her.  I used some craft papers, stamps, napkins, washi tape and of course some pens.  Glued her on the background…and now I love her.

Lady Dianna

Lady Dianna

I have names her Lady Dianna.  I don’t know why.  I have a sister named Dianna, but she doesn’t necessarily look like my sister.  She just told me her name was Lady Dianna.  So there you go.

Closer look at Lady Dianna.

I wanted you to see the stamp I used on the background.  It was given to me by my friend Dawn Howell.  I just love it!  It is the veins of the leaf!  Isn’t that wonderful!  It comes with four various stamps to a pack and is by Inkadinkado Stamping Gear.  All four are wonderful.

Even though this is in my Book of Days 2014, it does not coincide with Effy Wild’s prompts.  I am having trouble working with the prompts, but do not want to give up my BOD.  So, I am just creating my own pages and adding them to my BOD.  After all, I know Effy would tell me it is MY Book of Days and therefore I need to put in it what feels right to me.

INSPIRATION JOURNAL

Here is another page I have completed in my Inspiration Journal.  The quote I copied from somewhere…sorry I don’t know the author (let me know if you do and I will credit them).  ” Breaking someone’s trust is like crumpling a perfect piece of paper, you can smooth it over, but it’s never going to be the same again.”

This was done with the same process.  First sketching with my mechanical pencil, then completed with Prismacolor pencils, and finally a Sharpie pen.  I have tried to paint my faces, but find it very hard.  I may try again.  Maybe.  Someday.   LOL

Look what I got for my birthday!

Hi everyone!  I know, I haven’t been posting on my blog for almost a month!  Guess I have some catching up to do.  Today is my birthday.  For those of you who are interested, I am 69 today.  Thought I would share with you my wonderful present from my daughter, Cherrie.

Isn’t it gorgeous!  Love it 🙂  OK now to sharing my art with you.

Week 3

What lies beneath

What lies beneath

I watched a video on u-tube by my friend Dawn Howell.  It is a two part video on painting a scene with a tree.  The first part is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuLCdMUe9x4  and you can find the second part from there.

Week 3

This was dedicated to my Mother.  I didn’t use Effy’s prompt, but made my own very personal page.

Thoughts of my Mom

Thoughts of my Mom

My Mother is in a nursing home and not doing well.  Struggling with Dementia and not eating the way she should be.

Week 4

Be aware of OPS (Other peoples stuff), but don’t let them take you over.  Be in the world, but not bombarded by it.

I am here

I am here

See the dot in the middle of my forehead.  When I was working on Week 5 on the other side of this page, I got paint on my face.

Week  5

What feeds your soul.  I completed this page using the same items that Effy used, because I related to those items so much.

What feeds your soul.

What feeds your soul.

I am thinking of doing another page about “What feeds your soul” before going on to week 6.  We will see.  This is how far I have gotten in my BOD.  On Monday, Effy will post week 8, so I really should start week 6.  🙂 ….However, it is my birthday, so I get to do whatever I want.  Right?

Week 3

You always make me smile

You always make me smile

Our new house always makes me smile.  I am enjoying watching Cherrie fix it up and helping her decorate it.

Week 4

Create your own character

Create your own character

I know, I know, it just looks like another of my faces.  I am still working on painting a face with character.  It will come some day.

Working with my Muse in my new space

I have been trying to work in my new space.  It is strange…having to get my Muse to work with me in a place she isn’t used to and that isn’t totally organized yet.  But I think we are starting to get our rhythm back.

Journal52

I am a little behind in my Journal52 prompts.  Not bad…but a little.  This is my week 2 page.  The prompt was:  My Happy Place.

Not a place I actually know, but a place I would like to be.

Book of Days Week 2 2014

This week for BOD we where supposed to complete a face on another surface and glue it onto our BOD page.  I completed this face…I believe it was December 7, 2013….and thought I would use it here.  I know, I wrote 2014 on the page, but that is obviously wrong and I have fixed it now.

She is done in colored pencils, pens and a little Carand'ache Neocolor II.

She is done in colored pencils, pens and a little Carand’ache Neocolor II.

We were to us similes in our composition.  The one Effy used was:  Color is to winter what music is to silence.  I love this it is great!  However,  I’m not very poetic and had a hard time coming up with something.  So what I ended up with was:  A smile is like the song from a bird.  May be it should have been:  A smile is to a face as a song is to a bird.  Or something like that.  But oh well…it is what it is  🙂

This is my completed page.

Then I thought:  what makes me smile?

Freedom to go where you want.

Freedom to go where you want.

This need for freedom may have come on me because my car was being repaired, and I had no way to get around.  LOL

Travel - even in your mind - can set you free.

Travel – even in your mind – can set you free.

I remember traveling around California with my friend and enjoy the wonderful memories.

My life

We are in the middle of week 3 for both of the groups and I need to get busy and finish the pages before Monday so I won’t be behind again.

For those of you who are curious, my car is back and working great.  It was not my transmission (thank goodness since that would have cost well over $2,000).  I needed a new Input Speed Sensor, had the tranny fluid replaced and replaced my battery.  The old battery had a crack in it and was leaking battery acid everywhere.  It all came to $425.  Much better than a new tranny.

Thanks to all of you for stopping by.  I truly appreciate it.  Put a smile on your face and have a beautiful day!  🙂

Where do I fit in?

I have been trying to understand where I fit in in the art world.  What type of artist I am.   I admire greatly those of you who can paint a face so that it looks like some great master painted it.  To me, you are great masters in your own right.  But do I want to do that?  No  At least not right now.  Than what is it that I want.  Why am I trying to draw faces at all?  I realize I just want the ability to draw faces well enough to put them on my collaged backgrounds.  LOL  I want to have something to put on the backgrounds some of the time, but want it to be something I made.  Clipping faces from magazines and putting them on the background (not that there is anything wrong with that)  just doesn’t make me happy.  I am searching for what makes me happy in my art.  Otherwise, why am I doing it?  I have no intention of selling my art, so I think I am only doing it to make myself happy.  🙂

I have decided that I am a Collage Artist, a Multi Media Artist and that the faces or other sketches, animals, houses, trees, flowers, etc., are incidental to the collage and background fun.

I have found the 29 Faces to be quite a challenge keeping up with.  And I think when this challenge is complete I will step back a bit from the face making and concentrate more on the mixed media thing for a while.  Give myself a rest.  Not to say that I won’t be making faces.  We do a lot of faces in Effy Wild’s Book of Days class and I will do them in my own journals, but I won’t have to create them daily.

Before I go I would like to share my angle.  I used her as face 19/29.  But she is really just something my muse wanted to do and I let her.  She and I enjoyed this and I will be working on doing some more angles in the future.

Faces and BOD

A few of weeks ago I was playing with my homemade spray paints and some new stencils I had purchased.  Just wanted to see if the spray paint worked OK and what the little stencils looked like when I used them.  Hmmm  should have taken a photo of that so you could see.  Oh well  🙂

Then one day I decided to try out sketching faces with just an ordinary pen I had around the house (a Papermate pen).  So I grabbed the piece of paper I had experimented with my paints on, turned it over and drew a couple of faces on it.  Liked the way the pen worked and have been using it here and there ever since.  It will write on most surfaces.  I will have to get more of them before this one runs out of ink.

So today at about 4:30 am I was unable to sleep and got up.  Thought I would work on another face.  Saw the two faces I had already drawn and decided to use those.  Thus catching myself up with faces!   Yahhh!  I added a little color with paint pens, colored pencils.  Tore the picture out of the page.  Flipped the bits that were left over so the spray paints and stencils showed.  Used Gell Medium to glue both the faces and the background down, and this is what I got.

Image

Face 17 and 18 for 29 Faces.  I had such fun doing this (even if it was 4:30 am)

Image

Face 17.  Was trying to do a childs face.  Going to try this some more.

Image

Face 18.  I like the way the face looks when you just put a minimal amount of color on it.  May do this more often.

Also thought I would share my Book of Days Lesson 11 with you in case you haven’t already seen it.

Image

This is the complete spread.  I used watered down acrylic paints for the background.  Then stencils and stamps for more texture.  I made a stencil out of cardboard for the feather.  Then used black acrylic paint to put down the basic feather and beige acrylic paint for the accent.  Highlighted it with black charcoal pencil.

Image

The face was sketched in colored pencil, painted with acrylics and highlighted in the colored pencils.  This was my first attempt at making a braid.  I like the way it turned out.  Will be doing it again.

OK That’s it for now.  Have to go see the doctor this morning.  I have been in pain (my hips) since Thursday and have procrastinated talking to the Dr about it long enough.  It is some better then it was at first, but I think that is just because I have been doing very little.  If I get up and stand for to long, or try to walk very far (like to the mail box) the pain comes back with a vengeance.  I haven’t got a clue why, so thought I should tell my Dr about it.  Hopefully he will look at me and it will be all better and that will be the end of that (not too likely though).   Don’t want something else wrong with me!!  So please send good thoughts.  Have a happy, smiley day!

Making a list for September

Making plans for September.  What new things to I want to participate in?  Want to be careful to not over commit.  I seem to want to try everything.  But that will mean I will not succeed at any thing and will end up feeling bad about myself.  Not a good place to put myself in.

1.  I of course will continue to participate in the activities of the Glitterhood.  The Book of  Days and the Book of Mirrors.  We are only in our 9th week of our 18 week program.

2.  I will continue with my blog.  I have enjoyed the experience of writing my blog and posting my art and photos.  So will continue this.

3.  I am starting a plan to have a me date one day a month.  To go somewhere, anywhere, even if I have to go alone.  This is something I read about with one of blog along friends.  I just am having trouble finding it so I can give credit to her blog.  (If you are her or know who she is, please let me know.)  To get out, take photos and see something.  I realized yesterday that I was feeling sorry for myself for never going anywhere.  So…No feeling sorry for myself allowed!  Go see and do!  I told my daughter about this.  Told her I wanted to go downtown Sacrament for a day trip this month and she wants to go too.  Company is not necessary, but always welcome.  So we are going on the Friday the 13th!!

4.  I am going to be practicing drawing faces.  So I decided to join the 29 Faces in 30 Days group.  Raine Phoenix and Sweatred Clover are also participating in.  Are you doing this?  Would love to know!  🙂

5.  I am probably going to join the Right Brain Planner that Cynthia Lee shared on her blog post

http://spirituncaged.com/2013/08/31/%E2%96%B6-august-right-brain-planner-and-art-journal/

Hope I did that right.  hehehe

6.  To make some new journal to work in as two of mine are complete.  Will share this with you in a future blog.

Blogalong 24 Post In 28 Days

The Blogalong with Effy Wild has been fantastic!  First of I created a blog on Aug. 3rd!  Then I did my first u tube video on Aug. 12th!  And I have done 24 blogs in 28 days!  I was so afraid I would create this blog and only give it a try a couple of times and quit.  I thank Effy Wild sooo much for creating this experience for me, and all of you for keeping me going.  Reading your blogs have kept me inspired to do this myself.  Thank you.

OK now I am going to share my BOM/BOD spread with you.

Image

This is my BOM spread for Week 9.  I loved everything about doing this!  It brought back happy memories of a day festival I went to in 2009.

Image

We danced with drums.  I should have put a little drum in her hand like the one I purchased at the time.  Oh well.  She is happy dancing the way she is.  🙂

Image

I really liked the idea of music notes being on the page, so I added my music note washi tape.  Different then Effy’s, but music notes just the same.

Here is my BOD spread

Image

Yes I know.  I spelled Wednesday wrong.  Decided to just leave it that way.

Image

The flowers are I die-cut from K&C Company that I purchased.  Just love them. 🙂  Then I used a stamp for my swirls and colored them in.

Image

The butterfly is from the same set of die-cuts.  Love butterflies!

Image

Loved the way this spread turned out.  Am very happy with it.  Haven’t done the writing in this, but will try to finish that part today.

Thank you all for going on this blogalong journey with me.  I will continue to read your blogs and to blog myself.

Sending hugs and smiles!

P.S.  I competed this blog this morning, only to have it to refuse to post.  So I had to redo the whole thing all over again.  I think I know what I did wrong.  So this should post.  Wish me luck  🙂

Another face

This is the face for Effy Wild’s Book of Days, Session 2, Lesson 7.  We were to try for a face that is not as perfect looking as we are usually striving to make.  Not that mine are perfect anyway, but that was the lesson.  The idea is that less perfect faces have more attitude and expression in them.

This face was very hard for me, not because I can’t make an imperfect face, but I just had soo much trouble painting her.  She has coat after coat of acrylic paint on her.  She developed a glossy texture and what I needed to do was to cover her with clear gesso before adding another coat, but I had no clear gesso.

My daughter says if I was supposed to make an ugly face, I failed.  She isn’t ugly, she is quirky.  She has personality.  OK  Here is my quirky face…

Here is a close up…

Here is the background for the left hand side.  I thought it turned out great so thought I would share it with you…

BOD Lesson 7 003

Hope you guys enjoyed!  Keep smiling  🙂

Texture in my Art Journal and a BOD page

I have been playing on a page in my Art Journal making texture.  Gluing papers down, a few letters and using some spackle with one of my stencils.  There is first a coat of Gesso, then probably about 6 or 7 coats of acrylic paint, then more Gesso.  There is lots and lots of yummy texture!

Image

Now what?  Guess I’ll walk away and come back latter and see what I come up with.

I also want to share with you my Book of Days 2013 Session 2 Week 6.  I used deli paper with Gelli printing, some napkins (Both deli paper and napkins sent to me by you guys!  Thank you very much!), some die -cut flowers from K&CCompany, acrylic paints,  lettering, some stenciling, and a copper colored Sharpie all went in to this page.  This isn’t exactly like Effy’s, but it has Deli paper with Gelli printing on it.  LOL  This is what my Muse insisted that I do.  So you know it is what I had to do.  Hope you like it.

ImagePaper, paste, pencils, pens and paint make me happy!

Would love to hear your comments.  🙂

Sometimes it is hard to decide what to do with the BOD or BOM spreads.  I understand what technique I am supposed to be using each week.  But sometimes the subject matter that Effy Wild is using in her demonstration BOD/BOM has nothing to do with my life.  And I have to ponder and ponder to find a subject that is suitable.  So I did my background for my BOM spread and started to ponder where to go with it now?  I am always telling people to smile…so I thought that was a good place to go.  Whenever you smile, you release chemicals into your system that just makes things better.  http://www.squidoo.com/smileforhealth#module11651412  So this is what I came up with.

Life is like a mirror, we get the best results when we smile at it.Image

I hope you enjoy my spread and  “Smile like you mean it.”  A quote from my friend Shannon.
